Vintage Antique Bicycle Prewar Dayton Sears Chief BikeEbay ended this auction early because i had not indian bike listed in the description! For your consideration is a prewar dayton chief manufactured yb the davis sewing machine co. For sears and roebuck sometime between 1914 and 1917, this is info i've been able to gather off the internet. One site said that this abdge was only manufactured from 1914 to 1915. One auction on ebay has a repop badge thats identical and states they were made from 1915 to 1917. From what i understand each color is baked enamal and individually kiln dried and it was a very lengthy process leading to its short manufacturing run. There is a brass inlay in the bottom of the crank tube with the # 054 or 064 stamped in it. The bike appears to have its original paint, that is whats left of it. Apparently the only color this bike was available in was carmine red and had a coat of white undre it. It also has a sturmey archer tricoaster hub model s with roiginal shifter and pulley. I have dated a hub that is identical in looks to 1914, that hub was a model n. The wheels are 28 wooden and very unique, note the metal band that runs along the interior of the wheel where the tire is mounted. The back wheel is very straight and in great condition, the front is in good condition but is missing the metal band and is slightly warped where the ends meet. The carrier has a very old repair on one left support.
The crank arm has been braised on the right end but still receives a pedal. The original pedals were inscribed chief and are missing, what yuo see is what you get! The bike overall is very straight, the left truss has a slight bend and the front fender does have some pitting. Also missnig is one chain tensioner.
